The suicide hotline is overloaded with calls following Trump’s 2024 presidential win. If you are a member of a marginalized community, things are about to become very hard for you under Donald Trump once he assumes power in 2025. The safeguards are all gone. Republicans control the House, Senate, and the presidency. The Supreme Court is compromised. One of the groups expected to be hurt the most by a Trump presidency is the LGBTQIA+ community — and they know it.
There’s a lot to worry about with the second iteration of a Trump presidency. This time, there are no guardrails. Republicans have the House, Senate, and presidency. Thanks to our failure to elect Hillary Clinton in 2016, the Supreme Court is stacked with Trump cronies. Since Trump appointed 200 federal judges in his first term, appeals courts are also in his pocket. America had a chance to stave off fascism, but we dropped the ball. Now, Trump can effectively do whatever he wants and there is no one standing in his way. Naturally, one of the groups The Donald has targeted more heavily than others is not feeling great about their prospects in 2025.
Trump spent perhaps more money running anti-transgender ads than anything else in the final days of the election, effectively making hate his “closing argument” to a nation that decided “your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation” is a more palatable message than Kamala’s “everyone should have homes.” Trump plans to reinstate the transgender military ban, end or limit LGBTQIA+ workplace protections, limit healthcare the community can receive, and ultimately end same-sex marriage.
Suicide Hotline Overloaded After Trump Victory
The morning of November 6 was not an easy one for Americans who didn’t want a quick descent into fascism. Unfortunately, Trump has told Americans of his plans and that’s exactly what for one reason or another the country chose. Now, as we prepare to live with the consequences of the actions of a majority of Americans who have decided fascism isn’t a dealbreaker, the LGBTQIA+ community is forced to deal with it.
Naturally, the suicide hotline is overloaded after Trump’s 2024 presidential win. “We’re sorry for the wait,” a screenshot posted on Twitter reads. “We’re experiencing high demand for LGBTQI+ support and are connecting you to a national crisis counselor.”
People have a reason to be worried. Donald Trump has promised to visit all sorts of horrors on our once-great nation — especially on various groups of typically oppressed people he doesn’t like. Trump’s promises to harm trans people are so horrifying that a new suicide hotline just for transgender folks has opened up:
We’re entering unprecedented territory as a nation. None of this is normal. Trump says he wants to take America back to the late 1700s. Believe him. But if you are thinking of harming yourself, please reconsider. It will absolutely get worse before it gets better — it would be irresponsible to lie to you — but it will get better.
